Success Story Qatar
Client: Jan De Nul Dredging Ltd., Boskalis Westminster Middle East Ltd

The project: Boskalis is building this mega LNG harbor in cooperation with dredging company Jan de Nul. The total contract value is approximately USD 2 billion in which Boskalis has a 50% share.

In connection with the construction of the harbour, 20 million m³ of limestone is to be dredged. Three heavy-duty cutters are to be used in this hard soil. Boskalis and De Nul are world leaders in the use of such dredging equipment. The dredged material will be used as landfill for a new terminal. The dredging work will also involve the reclamation of 25 million m³ of sand from the sea, to be supplied by hoppers. The contract also includes the construction of breakwaters that will protect the new harbor. The total length of these breakwaters is 21 km for which approximately 18 million tons of stone and 2.5 million m³ of concrete are to be used.

The construction of the harbor will more than quadruple the capacity of the current harbor of Ras Laffan, which was also constructed in 1992 by Boskalis and De Nul.

Our scope: For this prestigious project a mobile batching plant "Mobil Mix Liebherr 2.25" and an ice-plant was installed to produce 270 000m³ of concrete for the Jan De Nul Dredging Ltd., Boskalis Westminster Middle East Ltd., Ras Laffan Joint Venture for the Main Breakwater and Southern Breakwater contract.

In addition a second contract has been awarded in December 2006 to MCQ to produce 12 000 antifer blocks. The production of antifers was in two shifts which included the involvement of a subcontractor for transportation and an additional production area.

Starting in August 2007 the preliminary arrangements for the main contract took place. Several mix designes were tested with the decisive factors of concrete characteristic, workmanship and heat of hydration. After successful tests the delivery to the Main Breakwater started in November 2007. In the beginning the daily output was 200m³ which gradually rose to 800m³.

In December 2007 the delivery to the Southern Breakwater started with a daily requirement of 120m³; these two sites could be served with ease within 16 hours. To be prepared for the increased production in 2008 an additional batching plant with a new sophisticated and innovatave gravel-in-water cooling system was built. The quality of the concrete is significantly higher which leads to a better end result for the client.

Furthermore the hourly production capacity has been increased up to 300m³. MOBIL CONCRETE is the only company possessing three efficient technologies to control fresh concrete temperatures. Corresponding to your demands, local conditions and cost structures we can combine all three technologies in a flexible way to achive the best efficiency.
